How do we accomplish the goal of being Baby-Friendly? We are taking baby steps! There are 10 steps to this journey. We are going to talking about each step along the way.
Step 1 – Maintain a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health care staff.
A fundamental premise of the Breastfeeding Hospital Initiative is the hospital policy drives practice. Baby-Friendly hospitals support optimal infant nutrition and mother-baby bonding. Step one requires the development of a comprehensive infant feeding policy that establishes breastfeeding as the norm and describes how the remaining steps will be practiced at the facility. The hospital should include all facility practices that could potentially impact breastfeeding success.
We have examined, challenged, modified and developed all the possible ways we can offer an optimal level of care including making multiple changes. Some of these changes are offering all moms the opportunity to do skin to skin, encouraging rooming in and exclusive breastfeeding.
In addition we have talked with the VP of Clinical Support and have management’s full support. All of these changes are important so that we can be sure that all babies born at Milford Regional Medical Center are given the early support needed to achieve successful breastfeeding.
